Why Did Lord Krishna Lift Govardhan Mountain on His Little Finger ?

He gently questioned the villagers, "Why do we worship Indra every year?" as he observed them getting ready for the annual puja.

Krishna further said, “Goverdhan Mountain provides fresh grass for our cows, provides shelter to animals and birds, and keeps the environment around us in balance. For this, we should express respect and gratitude to Govardhan instead of Indra.” 

Initially the villagers were a little hesitant, as they were used to worshiping Indra and were afraid that Indra might get angry if they left this tradition.But Krishna reassured him, “The true divine power is in nature itself. Let us honor what we can see and feel, what truly sustains us.”

Celebrating Govardhan Puja

Convinced by Krishna’s wisdom, the villagers decided to worship Govardhan Mountain instead of Indra that year. They decorated the mountain with flowers and offered their food, milk, and sweets in gratitude. It was a joyful celebration, full of laughter, music, and unity with nature. The villagers thanked Govardhan for protecting them and helping them prosper, bringing them closer to their land.

Indra’s Anger and Revenge

However, up in the heavens, Lord Indra was watching all of this unfold. He felt insulted and angry that the people of Vrindavan chose not to worship him. “How dare these simple villagers ignore me! I am the god of rain, and I control their fate!” In a burst of anger and ego, Indra decided to teach the villagers a lesson and make them realize his power.

Indra ordered dark clouds to gather over Vrindavan and instructed them to unleash heavy rains and thunderstorms on the village. Soon, the sky darkened, and a fierce storm began. Rain poured down in torrents, turning the fields into rivers and flooding homes. It seemed like the storm would destroy everything.

The villagers were terrified. They had never seen such a relentless storm. Their homes were drowning, their cows had nowhere to go, and they couldn’t find any shelter from the rain. The people of Vrindavan, in despair, turned to Krishna, calling out to him for help.

Lord Krishna Lifts Govardhan Mountain

Krishna, hearing their pleas, comforted them, saying, “Don’t worry. I am here to protect you. Have faith.” With a calm and gentle smile, Krishna walked towards the massive Govardhan Mountain. He placed his little finger—the smallest finger of his left hand—under the mountain and, to everyone’s amazement, effortlessly lifted it up like an umbrella!

He called to the villagers, “Come under Govardhan Mountain. You will all be safe here.” The villagers were astonished to see Krishna holding up the huge mountain so effortlessly, with just his little finger. They quickly gathered under the mountain along with their cows, children, and all their belongings.

For seven days and seven nights, Krishna stood there, holding the mountain above them, sheltering everyone from the torrential rain. The storm continued, but the people of Vrindavan felt safe and protected under Govardhan’s mighty shelter. Krishna remained strong and calm, smiling at the villagers to reassure them that everything would be alright.

After seven days, the rain stopped, and the clouds disappeared. Lord Indra watched from above, amazed and humbled by Krishna’s divine act. He realized his mistake and understood that Krishna was not an ordinary boy but an incarnation of the Supreme Divine. Indra descended to Vrindavan, fell at Krishna’s feet, and apologized for his arrogance.

Krishna forgave Indra, explaining, “Power should always be used to protect and serve others, not to show dominance. True divinity lies in compassion, love, and humility.” Indra promised to remember this lesson and left, grateful for Krishna’s wisdom and mercy.

A New Tradition of Govardhan Puja

Since then, the people of Vrindavan began celebrating Govardhan Puja every year to remember Krishna’s divine act of lifting the mountain and protecting them. This festival became a symbol of gratitude towards nature, and a reminder of Krishna’s teachings on humility, faith, and protection of the environment.
